Hughes Network Systems Licenses Axis' Xcite to Speed Delivery of Next-Generation Wireless Networking Chip

Real-time hardware/software accelerator shortens time-to-market for next-generation wireless chips

SUNNYVALE, CA - March 22, 2002 - Axis Systems Inc., makers of high-performance system-on-a-chip verification solutions, today announced that Hughes Network Systems, Inc. (HNS), the world's largest provider of broadband satellite network solutions, has purchased Axis' Xcite verification system. With the help of Xcite, Hughes expects to be able to improve overall development schedules for its next-generation wireless chips. Verification is required to assure successful semiconductor designs at tape-out, before committing designs to fabrication.

Using Xcite, Hughes will extend its existing Verilog software verification environment to test the multi-million-gate design of the company's next-generation wireless networking chip. The rigors of new semiconductor design techniques require extremely long verification processes that go far beyond the capabilities of software-only design verification solutions. Xcite, based on Axis' patented ReConfigurable Computing (RCC) engine, consists of a single system with one design database that can be used throughout the development process, from software simulation and hardware-accelerated simulation to hardware-software co-verification. Xcite enables Hughes to transition smoothly between each phase of the verification process. The ability to swap between the hardware verification engine and the software simulation engine instantaneously enables designers to run at hardware speed while debugging their designs in a familiar software environment.

"We developed Xcite to solve problems just like those encountered by the Hughes design team," said Mike Tsai, Axis president and CEO. "Our Xcite system combines the robust design capabilities of a software simulator with the high speed of a hardware accelerator. When designers are dealing with complicated system-on-a-chip designs to support next-generation systems, they need the versatility of software combined with the power of high-performance hardware to adequately verify designs."
